My suggestions are not usually mainstream and I'm never up with current releases, but here's some we liked:
Beowulf and Grendel (2005) *not* the new one.
Tristan and Isolde (2006) - historically accurate costuming :)
The Bourne Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum trilogy
The Caine Mutiny (1954) - Humphrey Bogart
A&E Hornblower TV series (2001) - with Ioan Gruffudd, there are 6 I think
I Claudius (1976) - I've never had the chance to watch the whole thing, but it sucks you in.

you could always have a look through my queue and recent ratings. we recently watched "Into the Wild" and i think you two would enjoy that one. also you have to see Flight of the Conchords, perhaps the funniest half-hour comedy HBO's put out that i've seen (and no i haven't started watching Curb Your Enthusiasm... yet)

What Meg said - the Netflix Friends page is a great source of inspiration - although it doesn't yet work with Firefox 3 8(
Some recent favorites of mine:
American Gangster
Weeds
The Wire
Across the Universe
Great World of Sound
I'll second the Bourne Trilogy we well as Flight of the Conchords - who have an album coming out next week.

Not sure if these are available on netflix yet, but they're pretty mainstream-
Persepolis (if you can handle animation)
The Darjeeling (if you can handle wes anderson)
Juno
There Will Be Blood
No Country for Old Men
if you didn't catch these in '06-
Perfume
Babel
Pan's Labyrinth
2nd American Gangster & Weeds, FotC needs new material.

Flight of the Conchords is hilarious! They played SXSW last year too which is on Youtube somewhere. Great stuff! Unfortunately I don't have HBO so was watching them on Youtube and that guy got banned, but forking up some cash to support them is definitely worth it - I don't know why I didn't think of looking for that.
Have you ever seen Trailer Park Boys?

Some recent netflix that I've enjoyed:
Army of Shadows
Doctor Zhivago
On the Waterfront
Chalk
The Last King of Scotland
The Cincinnati Kid
Pan's Labyrinth
Overall though, I have the opposite problem. I can't seem to keep up with what I'm getting from them, and have a queue that's entirely too large.

Once
Arrested Development
Posted by: DG | April 16, 2008 at 04:09 PM
Have you seen The Mist?
I second most of Pete's and CS' recommendations.
But have you seen Henry Fool (there is a sequel, but I can't remember what it is called)?
My favorites are:
Razor's Edge (Bill Murray)
A History of Violence
Bar Fly (God, I just love this one, I watch over and over again)
Bullitt (Steve McQueen-megasexy car chase scene)
Manufacturing Consent (Noam Chomsky)
I'll try to think of more.

I'd second INTO THE WILD, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and ONCE...
others I've enjoyed recently: THIS IS ENGLAND, THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES AS TOLD BY..., SUNSHINE (if you can ignore some of the blatantly unrealistic psuedo-science)
But really its hard to recommend films without some parameters...

I can't even imagine a life where my netflix queue would run dry. I fuckin' hate you!
but here's some of my recent views anyway:
El Mar Adentro (The Sea Inside)
Shortbus
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Here are some that are one my list but I haven't watched yet:
The Flower of My Secret
All About Eve
Sunshine
The Pillow Book
I'm always using that "if you liked this, then you might like that" feature.
Classics are always good, too.

It isn't actually dry, more so filled up with a bunch of things that we're not very excited about. The crap has a habit of sitting in the bucket and accumulating until you have a bucket full of crap, if you know what I mean. Our box of Lucky Charms has no more marshmallows in it... er.. um... yeah, that. :0)

hint: don't watch shortbus when the kids are awake ;)

The Station Agent is a good one too.

Joyeux Noel
The Diving Bell & The Butterfly (on DVD 04-29-08)

One film you really need to add to the list if you haven't seen it yet: Cidade de Deus (City of God)
It's #16 on the IMDB Top 250 - another great source for netflix ideas.
Posted by: Pete | April 18, 2008 at 02:25 AM
also, even if you don't relate to small town Texas or high school football, you should put the Friday Night Lights tv show (not the movie) in your queue. the writing and acting are both outstanding.

The Golden Compass was a quite poor literary adaptation, but it was also a gorgeous movie with wonderful steampunk trappings.
I'm also a big fan of watching tv series on DVD. I watched Kyle XY, Heroes and Firefly that way (Serenity is a decent movie as well, by the way).
Posted by: ohwilleke | April 18, 2008 at 12:49 PM
Firefly comes highly recommended from many geek friends at I-Con, NP.
Posted by: in8sworld | April 18, 2008 at 07:29 PM
Firefly! My favorite sci-fi show of all time. Dethroned ST:TNG hard. I own the series. If you haven't seen it, do so asap.
Posted by: Non-Prophet | April 18, 2008 at 07:34 PM
Yeah. I am glad you added my recommendations
Posted by: Friar_Tuck | April 20, 2008 at 11:41 PM
we watched Across the Universe Saturday- it blew big time.
Posted by: dr. evil | April 21, 2008 at 11:57 AM
It's too bad FF didn't have more seasons...or just more episodes dedicated to River Tam. I bet it was the goofy theme song that killed the show - "You can't take the sky from meee!" blehhh. Have you checked out the newer Dr Who series? If not, your inner-scifi-geek is seriously missing out on something special.
