This is telling. Some marines who have completed their four years of service will be recalled and sent to Iraq and Afghanistan. The deal the marines had already agreed to was that they would be on call for four years after their standard commitment had been fulfilled. This is significant because it speaks to the state of our military and how Iraq is not an endeavor that is small or insignificant. Our military is taxed over Iraq.
from cnn.com:
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush has authorized the U.S. Marine Corps to recall 2,500 troops to active duty because there are not enough volunteers returning for duty in Afghanistan and Iraq, Marine commanders announced Tuesday.
yep... just what we need to waste our treasure and our young men on... an oil-soaked piece of dirt.
Can you imagine if all that money and manpower was used to improve power efficiency and develop renewable sources of energy? We sure as heck would not be an oil-based economy any more! Makes my blood boil..

BushCo is devastating our military.
The exact opposite of their rhetoric and their "support" for our troops.

I guess I dont feel too bad for soldiers earning their keep. Personally, I am a pacifist. I would never sign up for military service. But if your job is to travel the world in defense of our country, then do it. If not you should not have joined up in the first place.
The folks I really feel bad for in this whole situation are inner city kids who joined the military because it was either military, gangs, or McDonalds for a job.
But almost everyone I know in the military joined up because they either believed in the cause in Iraq, or chose the job among many options as a profession.
I think the scrolling sidebar is a better arguement against the war personally. I guess that is what I am saying

It's just that it's always been a saying among Marines after they go inactive reserve that 'they'll take old women and babies before they get to me again' because traditionally it just didn't happen that the gov't would reactivate Marines who already did their requisite tours. It just shows how extended our commitment is over there. The next logical step in order to maintain our presense there more than another year or so is a draft.

I agree with Nate. If Iraq and Afghanistan continue to fester in the long term, and especially if conflict breaks out with Syria or Iran or if the US decides to get involved with Israel/Lebanon I don't see how we will avoid a draft.
A whole lot rides on who takes congress this fall.
